One year after the last time, I've just finished moving the site to a new host. The year thing isn't a coincidence, it's because I had paid for one year of hosting on a really good offer. Now that year is coming to an end, and after recently becoming less happy with the service we were getting, it made financial and technical sense to move again.

You may have noticed the site was having some problems earlier. By freakish coincidence, when I visited this morning before making preparations for the move, the part of the database that holds details of all the topics had become corrupted. This meant my planned smooth move became much more complicated, as copying a corrupted database over to the new host wouldn't have made much sense. So I ended up having to fix the site on the old host before carrying out the move. All in all, it went better than I expected, though obviously I could have done without the broken database to start things off!

Now would be a good time to mention a change I made to the site a few weeks ago but didn't get around to announcing yet. All file attachments have been deleted and aren't being restored. Furthermore, the ability to upload new attachments has been disabled for all member groups. I made these changes to make the site a lot easier for me to backup and restore. I realise this will be a disappointment to some and for that I apologise. However, with the widespread availability of free image and file hosting sites these days*, I don't believe it will cause any major problems for anyone. This change does not affect avatars and personal photos, which are still hosted on the site.

I still have backups of the site from before the attachment purge. If you uploaded a file that you really need, give me the details (filename, filetype) and I will try and track it down for you.

Thanks for continuing to be a member of Pabook.net. :)

* Please recommend any good image and/or file hosting websites you know of in this topic. I may then put the best ones in the rules and info section somewhere.

@shakey: Which one? :P

Pab-- Nice one, guv. Any chance you could easily locate and email all of my attachments to me? :P

I use Imageshack.us for images and I don't have a problem with them at all. Apparently you can upload any type of file to them (e.g. XLS, ZIP) and just rename it .JPG and it'll work - then use the "Direct Image" link and people can change the extension back once they've downloaded the file. :up:

Actually it turns out that the files were all renamed by IPB, so to figure out which is which I have to dig through the attachments table in the database. It's still possible though and I'm perfectly willing to do it, for serious requests anyway. :P

Are there any other suggestions for file hosting other than imageshack (I have my own web hosting, this is more for other people)? I rarely made use of the attachment feature, but it was nice to have for those one or two times when it made sense to use it.
