As you can no doubt tell, the forum and blog software has received a major update. The upgrade took far longer than planned, which was the reason for the site being down for the past 27 hours or so. Although there are bound to still be a few rough edges, as far as I can tell most of the site is functioning normally again now so we should be able to resume normal operations.

With regards to new and changed features, I'm pretty much in the dark like you, as I haven't used this new version of IPB much. One thing I like so far is the SEF (search engine friendly) URLs, so for example /forums/index.php?showtopic=14997 becomes /forums/topic/14997-front-page-problem/. Which reminds me, I've changed the address of the site slightly in that the 'www.' prefix has been dropped. This shouldn't affect anything, but if you're having trouble with logging in you might want to try clearing your cookies just in case.

As usual with software upgrades, we've temporarily lost a few parts of the site. The shoutbox being the main one in this case, though I'm working on getting that back as soon as possible. The subscription manager is also missing, as it isn't built-in to the main software anymore and the add-on for it isn't finished yet. In the unlikely event that you wish to subscribe to Member++ in the near future, please follow the 'manual subscription' method outlined in Subscriptions and Donations.

If you notice any problems with the main functionality of the site, i.e. the forums, portal and blogs, please report them in this topic.

Finally, during our extended downtime yesterday, I set up a Facebook group for the site. I plan to use this to keep everyone up to date on what's going on with the site when it's down in the future, so please bookmark that link or better still join the group.

That is all. Welcome back. :)

Hmm... I'm not quite sure how I feel about the new skin yet. Is there any possibility it will be back the way it was?

Almost none. This is the only skin that is distributed with IP.Board now. Although in theory someone could make a skin to emulate the old one, I'd be hesitant to use it anyway because heavily modified skins are a real pain to update when new versions of the software are released. I'll probably make the usual few tweaks here and there as I learn my way around the new system, but that's about it.

New skin is spiffy. I'm sure I'll like it more once I figure out where everything is now.

Just a minor thing but maybe an easy fix... the "Latest Blog Entries" module on the portal is a bit... awkward?
http://www.bexgd.com/pics/forums/latestblog.jpg

Any way to separate the name of the entry from the name of the person who wrote it? Cuz right now mine says "Okay but I think it'll be too big Chica" and that's just not the image I want to portray...

:P

seems that on the members list there is still a little bug, the pics aren't shown next to the members name.

I like the layout of the forum, needs a bit of time to find your way again.

The pictures are shown, they're just the 'personal photos' and not avatars as you perhaps expect. You can set your personal photo here.

There is actually a related problem where lots of members have a missing personal photo, as in instead of the default silhouette there is a broken image. That's been the case for a few versions now though, and I haven't found a solution yet. It's no big deal though, and it would be fixed if everyone just set a personal photo.

I laughed at the "hand-scrawled" pabook across the top. Love it. Will that stay?

The overall style is nice, but there's WAY too much unnecessary whitespace now:

Stop maximizing your window?
Looks pretty swank in 1152xH

relevant bookmarklet:
javascript:self.moveTo(264,0);self.resizeTo(1152,screen.availHeight);

That said, the new banner is FREAKING awesome, but there is a lot of unused vertical whitespace around and between posts.
And according to the Neowin guys, old themes aren't back-compat with this new version.

Don't you mean that the new version isn't backwards compatible with old themes?

"It's too advanced to be compatible with anything else!"

Is there any way to indicate that blog entries have been read, like in the last version? Unless the indications there and I'm more blind than I thought.

On the subject of blogs, in the previous version there was no way to sort blogs by last comment/post. This was available in the versions before the last version, but not the last one.

I need to play around some more before posting more criticisms. :P

Thanks, Pab!

Psst... "Action failed. You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day"

I don't know what that is, but I think we could probably do without it -- we're not Digg. :P

I do like the scroll at the top. As for the rest of it, I'm going to have to get used to all of it.
