Is it reasonable to hold your college responsible if you can't find a job after graduating? I think not. Some people think otherwise.

A recent college graduate is suing her alma mater for $72,000 -- the full cost of her tuition and then some -- because she cannot find a job.

...

In her complaint, Thompson says she seeks $70,000 in reimbursement for her tuition and $2,000 to compensate for the stress of her three-month job search.

As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record. But Monroe's career-services department has put forth insufficient effort to help her secure employment, she claims.

Her "academic credentials" include a C average and she thinks that should get her a job?

72k?

Wow. Thats like two years at USC.

C average? wow. thats never going to classes at a community college.

Seriously though. This sounds like she had planned to get her degree and file suit soon after just to get her money back.

I know attorneys these days who cant find jobs. Just because you have a degree doesnt mean you are going to get a job. I never finished (plan on it though) and have an awesome job. I make more than friends who have masters degrees. Its all about what field you go into and how competitive it is.

My cousin in Chile studied something I'm not sure what but having to do with salmon farming and stuff like that because it was a booming career. Then all the fish started to die and then he graduates and there are no jobs left. Its all relative.

anywho... bitch is crazy.

I went to Arizona State, I don't remember the day when there was the contracted they signed saying I would have a job. Maybe I missed that day. Now, somehow not too shocked about this one. The article is a little lax on details about her and her major, but found in the Wikipedia article on the college "Her opinion in the claim is that with her 2.7 GPA and good attendance record, most employers would be interested in giving her a job." So let's take an opportunity to stereotype here...

2.7GPS, not horrible, but still not good, yet she thinks is is great. Small private New York College. Named Trina. Expected everything to go her way and people to be throwing things at her after college. I am guessing "daddy's girl." Didn't pay a dime for college, had the nice care and dorm/apartment. Lived under the delusion that everyone loves her and wants her and she is better then everyone else. Doesn't quite understanding why people wouldn't hire her. Her GPA is great, her parents tell her that every semester, and she is perfect even though she has no practical experience. Who wouldn't want her?! Clearly the college did something wrong. I bet there was a sorority involved at some point.

(Plus I think I described nearly half the women at Arizona State)

Yeah, probably. The red-flag to me would be her "solid attendance record" that she seems to think is some kind of accomplishment. Anytime someone feels they deserve recognition for meeting basic expectations it's like a warning to stay far, far away from them.

Given how many people I know who've been unable to find degree-related jobs after leaving university (mostly arts degree types) the sheer sense of entitlement here seems almost offensive. I'm not sure she has any real grounding in reality.

I agree, seems to be another case of "Society owes me ________"

I always wondered how fucked you'd be if you were one of my many contemporaries who took degrees in psychology and sociology not out of interest, but because they were easy. So many people were doing those courses that surely they would vastly outnumber the demand? Especially if the person concerned did it really half-assed, ended up with a Desmond, from a uni that's easier to get into than Katie Price's pants, in a subject they don't care about, in an oversupplied market. And it cost £20k. Wise move...

Brittany graduated with 3 majors in 4 years, was Magna Cum Laude and works at a preschool.

"Many US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find identical pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. The same message is also echoed by private schools, such as John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago."
