Great player for those who like a no-nonsense swiss army knife.

To quote my passive-aggressive self in the official discussion thread:

Congratulations on shipping 1.0! I really hate what happened to the context menus, and I think that's awful and backwards but otherwise it seems nice so far!

The other changes were so minimal, I wish I hadn't upgraded from the previous build (0.9.6.8 or something).. but I bet the 1.0 would attract a lot more people who were on the fence. It's been a LONG road from 0.8.3!

Can it play blu-ray discs over HDMI?

Isn't that kind of like asking if a toaster makes French onion soup? :/

I think it's more like asking if the figurative swiss army knife has an equally figurative corkscrew tool built-in.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Maybe you're reacting to the rabid foobar2k fanboy fan-base, some of whom can be pretty annoying in a casual social setting, but if that's the case, your comments would be more appropriately directed to someone at Hydrogen Audio's foobar2k forum rather than here. On the other hand, maybe I've misinterpreted your intent, because tone is hard to convey in text and I don't know what HDMI is, but when I hear blu-ray I think video, and since foobar is an audio player wihtout video capabilities I assumed you were being glib. I could be wrong. Either way 1.0 is out for those who might be interested. If I've wasted your time or made some other social faux pas I can only say that it wasn't my intent.

I was referring to your original comment about foobar being like a "no-nonsense swiss army knife". I'm not that familiar with it myself, and my understanding was that it is primarily an audio player, but it sounded like there could have been a chance that it could also do video if you wanted it to (as a swiss army knife can do more than just cut stuff, after all). Similarly to how Winamp eventually got video support (albeit fairly crappy video support).

So anyways, it was a serious question, as my laptop has a blu-ray drive, and I just recently figured out how to hook it up to my TV over the HDMI-out port, so I need something that can play back blu-ray over HDMI (which I think means it needs to have HDCP support, or some such nonsense) because now that I have everything talking together my inner geek demands that I try it out for real. I don't really know anything about the foobar2k fanbase, just looking for something that can play a blu-ray disc on my laptop and send the video over to my TV.

Ah, I see. In any case, no it doesn't. The programmer, Peter, is notorious for being very vehemently opposed to adding video support to foobar. I don't know the whole story, but I think he was a Nullsoft employee who went off on his own because he didn't like the direction of Winamp back in the 2.xx days, even before it had video support. I've got a great deal of respect for him, but he and some of the others who are really excited about his work tend to rub some people the wrong way because of their particular-ness and strong opinions about programming.

edit: according to wikipedia, he did indeed freelance for Nullsoft at one point.

Grr, no! I stopped binding a hotkey for quick searching entirely. Not to sell it short though, it's still the best music player out there :D

Besides getting the old context menu customization back, the only feature request I have right now is to be able to use png/gif/whatever for custom buttons, and not just .ico files. With columns_ui I recall being able to use PNG's*, but since then the default UI has improved a lot (and rolled a lot of columns UI's functionality into itself).

* How could I forget? You had to go and track down the PNG library files to get it to work :P

I'm really digging the default UI these days. Had columns_ui for a bit but switched back. Nice combo of customization with minimalism and everything looks nice (the default buttons on columns_ui are kinda ugly, imo). Like some of the features of columns, though, like having the album artwork in the playlist, ala iTunes. Mostly I prefer the clean, lightweight look you can get with the default. It's reached a nice balance between customizable and easy to use.

I found a thread in the Foobar forums about the context menu issue, inwhich "Canar" comes off as a big jerk*, everybody bickers, and our own Shakey_Snake offers some clarification. Apparently it caused more problems than it solved, and it confused new users. Too bad they settled on this as the solution, though.
I only wanted like 4 things in my context menu, it looks pretty dumb now with the "delete" item in a submenu by itself:

* that's just the impression I get.. Actually almost every time I've gone to the Foobar forums to search/post for support, their responses have been pretty rude and unhelpful :S

And regarding the search focus bug, I discovered at work (where I use 0.9.6) that it's sometimes possible to get the window to pop up properly. I'm going to test it a bit more later to see if I can get a reproducible use case, but it seems like the behaviour is buggy or at least inconsistent.
In 1.0, however, you actually can't assign a global hotkey to it at all. Or you can assign one, but it simply doesn't do anything.

Assign it to point to View->Playlist Search rather than Edit->Search
